FANA: Back in a Sec was created during a period of profound uncertainty. In early 2026, following a prolonged internet shutdown in Iran, I became acutely aware that my access to creative tools, communication, and the wider world could disappear again without warning. At the same time, a new generation of AI filmmaking tools was making something previously impossible feel within reach: the ability for a single artist to create a coherent narrative film through an almost entirely generative workflow. I initially approached the project as an experiment and a teaching exercise, hoping to demonstrate these emerging possibilities to my students. The story grew from observations of self destructive thrill seeking behaviors I had witnessed among people around me. A reckless drive through a storm became the foundation for a narrative about risk, consequence, and the fragile line between survival and catastrophe. As the film developed, its central idea of a life splitting into multiple possible futures began to mirror my own sense of living within uncertainty. The production was completed under intense time pressure, before another internet shutdown severed access for nearly three months. What began as a technical proof of concept therefore became a record of a fleeting moment: a film made in the narrow space between two periods of disconnection. For me, the significance of AI cinema lies not in automation, but in access. These tools can empower artists working under limitations, whether financial, geographic, or political, to create ambitious cinematic works that would otherwise remain unrealized. FANA: Back in a Sec marks the beginning of that exploration and the first cinematic chapter in a much larger journey.
